How to Surf in Da Nang
Your complete guide to getting started in the waves
Why Da Nang?
Da Nang's My Khe Beach is one of the best places in Southeast Asia to learn surfing. The gentle beach break, warm water year-round, and sandy bottom make it perfect for beginners.
Whether you're a complete beginner or looking to improve your skills, the local surf community welcomes everyone. Here's everything you need to know to get started.
Equipment Basics
Start with a soft-top foam board (8-9 feet). These are forgiving, stable, and won't hurt you when you fall. Local schools provide them.
Attaches your board to your ankle. Essential for safety - keeps your board from hitting others and makes it easy to retrieve after a wipeout.
Applied to the deck of the board for grip. Tropical wax is used in Vietnam's warm waters. Schools provide this.
Protects from sun and board rash. Long-sleeve recommended for Vietnam's strong sun. Bring your own or buy locally.
Surf Etiquette
- 1.The surfer closest to the peak (where the wave breaks) has right of way. Don't drop in on someone already riding.
- 2.Don't paddle around someone to get closer to the peak - that's called 'snaking' and it's disrespectful.
- 3.When paddling back out, go around the breaking waves, not through the lineup where people are surfing.
- 4.If you're unsure who has priority, make eye contact and communicate. A simple nod goes a long way.
- 5.Respect local surfers - they know the spot best. Be friendly, patient, and wait your turn.
Safety Tips
- •Know how to swim confidently before attempting to surf. Rip currents can pull you out.
- •Check the cam and ask locals about conditions before heading out. Start on small days.
- •Apply reef-safe sunscreen liberally. The tropical sun is intense, even on cloudy days.
- •Drink plenty of water. Surfing is physically demanding and dehydration is common.
Local Surf Schools
The best way to learn is with professional instruction. Local surf schools offer lessons for all levels, equipment rental, and local knowledge that will accelerate your progress.
